Events of the 2008-2009 School Year

All in all, our Kappa Delta chapter was extremely successful inour philanthropies this year. As mentioned below, Shamrock was a huge success, and we received participation and donations from a lot of different organizations around campus. During recruitment this year, we made quilt squares for our Philanthropy round, in which we drew and decorated them for the children in the hospital. Afterwards, we put them together and donated the entire quilt to the Children's Hospital in Washington D.C. In addition, through our Kappa Delta Nacho Sales, we raised approximately $300, in which we were also able to donate to the Children's Hospital.

While our chapter cares greatly for our own philanthropies, we also like to make the initiative to help out and get involved with other chapters' philanthropic events. Therefore, this year, we decided to donate $150 to co-sponsor Alpha Tau Omega's annual Virgin Party. Virgin Party is a concert that raises money and awareness for the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers and the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which supports the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Lastly, we decided to donate $200 and co-sponsor a barbecue hosted by Kappa Alpha Theta and Phi Gamma Delta, which raised money for the American Red Cross and the Court Appointed Special Advocates Association for Children.

JOG FOR JUSTICE

Jog ForJustice is a 5k run, (or walk), that takes place on the University of Maryland campus to raise money for the Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Program Advocate Office Victim Assistance Fund (VAF). Partaking in the Jog For Justice helps to ensure that every survivor of domestic violence has his or her needs met, which is exactly why Kappa Delta chooses to participate.

This year, seventeen Kappa Deltas participated, and as a chapter, we donated $350 to the foundation. While we were primarily there to support the fund, being able to run with each other made the 5k extremely enjoyable for all of us.

SHAMROCK

On November 2nd we held our annual Shamrock Wiffle Ball Tournament to raise money and awareness for Prevent Child Abuse America. The event was a great success and wewere able to raise $2171.50 in total profits!  $434.20 (20% of profits) will be donated to Kappa Delta Foundation Children in Need Fund, a Fund held by Kappa Delta Nationals. To date, Kappa Delta's around the U.S. have worked together Nationally to donate over $7.1 million to help prevent child abuse in our country. The remaining $1737.30 (80%) will be donated to our local recipient, The Family Tree. Visit their website at www.familytreemd.org.

We had 20 teams register to play wiffle ball on Chapel Field on campus. Moe's Southwest Grill in College Park donated food to the event along with drinks donated by Monster Energy, Vitamin Water/Smart Water, and smoothies from Robek’s in College Park. We sold raffle tickets and gave away prizes from Bookholders.com, Starbucks, Bagel Place, Banana's Hair, R.J. Bentley's, and Moe's.

Congratulations to Lambda Chi Alpha for beating the defending champions, Chi Phi, in the championship round! And thanks to everyone who came and helped make the day fun and a great success!
